Ritsumeikan University, being one of the most leading private universities in Japan, provides many bachelor degrees for you to study in. As of 1980s, Ritsumeikan University built its own Information Science department, however there was not more than 1 department back then. Presently, There are 4 departments here. Computer Science (or Information System in Japanese), Communication, Artificial Intelligence, and Media Department.
Currently, i belong to the first one, Department of Computer Science. As a 2nd year student who does not speak Japanese well enough, getting into a lost-in-translation problem is not unfamiliar here. 90% of the lectures are held in Japanese, only 10% of them are fortunately English classes. Some English classes i have taken so far are:
- Information Science: A study of the outest surface of this field. For instance, basic computer architecture, basic data structures, fundamental algorithms, foundation of software engineering, etc.
- Software Engineering: Software designing process, software publishing process, software’s cycle of life, those kind of things are provided here. This lecture’s professor was a very amazing person, and he’s Russian by the way. He assisted us how to yield a good software. ‘A good software does not depend on the people who made it, It is good because the making process was neat, clear, and organized. It’s as simple as that’, He said.
- Computer Network: As obvious as it says. IPv4, IPv6, ARP, RARP, TCP/IP, UDP, OSI, etc.
And of course the rest are Japanese classes which may require your perseverance if you want to pass. Ofcourse, if you speak Japanese it will not be too rough on you.
Here are the lists of Japanese classes i have taken (or current taking) so far:
- 確立統計 — Statistics and Probabilty
Programming Language
Introduction of Computer Science
Introduction of Computer Architecture
Experiments for Computer Science
Compiler
4 — Mathematics: Vector’s Space
Logic Circuit
Data Structure and Algorithms
Theoritical Studies of Information Science
Based on my personal experience and opinion, all of the Japanese classes is not too hard if you can comprehend what the teacher says. Ironically speaking, I can understand better than all of the Japanese students in the class even with this not-too-well-enough of my Japanese level. hmm, strange, right? Well, i guess ‘laziness’ is the main big problem which plays role here.
Okay, It was a brief explanation about my studies here. As of the next post, I will start to post my ideas, projects, or even reviews or facts about something related to the field. Again, I will make it as simpler as possible, and feel free to leave comments and advices!
